What happens during counselling?

During the session, we get to know each other, discuss the specifics of the chosen therapy, what you want to get out of the sessions and how we can work together.

The length of the therapy may vary depending on what you bring into therapy. It can last from a few sessions to several months or over a year. It may take several sessions before you start to see progress, but you should gradually start to feel better. Between 8 and 10 sessions is usually considered a short therapy. Among people who have received counselling in the UK, 65% of people improve after 7 sessions.

What is walk and talk?

Walk and Talk is rapidly emerging as a successful therapy taken into the outdoors rather than in a traditional office. Walking outside can help us feel grounded and connected to nature, or each other. Walking alongside each other changes the interaction.

Research shows that walking outdoors can positively change the brain and reduce negative thinking. Just 20 minutes in nature increases the feel-good hormones oxytocin, releases endorphins, and reduces the stress hormone cortisol, so it is not surprising that it helps to alleviate fatigue, tension, depression, anxiety, anger… When you add the benefits of walking outdoors with those of talking to a qualified counsellor truly listening, the result is a different kind of counselling combining body and mind.

The initial session takes place indoors. We can discuss what you would like from the sessions, check we are comfortable working together, agree on the location, logistics, a bad weather plan, or what we do if encounter someone we know…Walk and Talk Counselling does not require a high level of fitness, just to be able to walk for at least 20 minutes. I will match your pace, so you feel comfortable, whether you want a slow, relaxing session or a more active, fast-paced one.

The very act of walking is a metaphor for moving forwards.

How can I cancel/Change my booking?

If for any reason you need to cancel or rearrange any sessions I request a minimum of 48 hours’ notice (or longer if possible), to enable me to offer the appointment to somebody else who may need it.

If your appointment is face-to-face and find yourself unable to attend the session due to transport problems etc, there is an option to have the session over telephone or online instead.
